Fun Hummingbird Tree Crafts to make with the kids

The Hummingbird is also called the messenger of joy and it is always good luck to see a hummingbird. I saw lots of hummingbirds around the time of my daughter Avery’s birth. Recently Avery and I made these cute hummingbird crafts to hang on trees in honour of tree planting hero and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai who died several months ago. She used to tell a beautiful story about the hummingbird: See it here: VIDEO: I will be a hummingbird. I will do the best I can.

Avery had a lot of fun making the hummingbird craft as it involved finger painting. We made a bunch of hummingbirds and hung them from trees in Canada and two months later we brought a hummingbird with us to hang from a tree in Zambia. We were in Zambia to donate trees to children from MY CHARITY – The ChariTREE Foundation. While there, I told the children about the story of the hummingbird. VIDEO: from our ‘Tree Trip’ to Zambia.

What you’ll need to make your own hummingbird craft:

Green and blue finger paint
Silver sparkle paint in a tube
Paint brush
Black and white construction paper
Dark Blue marker
Scissors
Glue
Glitter
hole punch
green ribbon

How to:

Have your child finger paint two pieces of paper with blue, green and silver (or whatever colour combo you want) – try to fill both pages with paint.
Before the paint dries have your child sprinkle sparkles over the hummingbird.
Let dry for three hours.
Cut the two pages into one big oval (for the body); two big tingles (for wings); one smaller triangle (for the tail); and one small but long tingle (for the beak). See image.
Fold the wings and the tail piece accordion style and glue them to the back of the oval. Add the beak, draw the birds eves
Glue the pieces together and use the marker to draw on the bird’s eyes and some hearts on the hummingbird’s body.
Draw lines along the wings with your silver sparkle paint.
Once dry punch a hole with a hole punch in one wing and tie a ribbon through it.
Go outside and hang it from a tree.

Canadian Children’s Environmental Educator Wins National Award

Feb 8, 2012 – VANCOUVER, BC – Andrea Koehle Jones has been honoured with the Canadian Camping Association’s Award of Excellence for her efforts to promote environmental stewardship by giving young campers across Canada trees.

“I love working with camps because camp staff understand how important it is for kids to experience the outdoors – especially now when many children are having fewer and fewer opportunities to get outside and really connect with nature. This is a real loss because research shows that contact with nature makes kids feel better about themselves,” said Koehle Jones, founder of The ChariTREE Foundation and Love Trees – the children’s tree planting and environmental education programs. Her programs give trees to children around the world through schools, camps and other children’s organizations.”This really is a fun and rewarding program and it has been so successful because of the wonderful support of The Canadian Camping Association,” she said. Koehle Jones received the award last night at the Canadian Camping Association’s banquet at the Stillwood Camp and Conference Centre for her work to raise awareness about environmental issues with young campers.

“I’m deeply honoured,” said Koehle Jones, a former Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da camper and program director. “Summer camps offer kids one of the best ways to get outside and connect with nature. I really think if children are going to make a lifelong commitment to protect the environment for themselves and future generations, they first need time to explore the wonders of nature.”

Koehle Jones also credits the program’s success to her mentor, Catherine Ross, former Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da owner / director and current communications manager of the Canadian Camping Association, as well as the many generous ChariTREE Foundation donors and corporate partners.

In the last three years campers across Canada have planted more than 30,000 trees. “The program keeps growing and my hope is to give even more children trees this year,” said Koehle Jones who lives with her husband and two young children on Bowen Island off the coast of Vancouver. She is also the author of the children’s tree planting book – The Wish Trees.
